I have no issue with the African Samurai Yasuke character. He's a cool character whenever he shows up in any other game. It just doesn't feel like it fits in an AC game for him to be a playable character. I think this wouldn't have been a big deal at all if he was just one of the historical figures you meet, like every AC beforehand.

The modern ideologies that Ubisoft so proudly follows condemns cultural appropriation. In their mind, you can't wear a sombrero if you're not Mexican, you can't wear dreads if you're not black and so on because it is "insensitive" or "disrespectful" to a culture. Among other nonsense. And yet here you have an entire group of people (the Japanese) telling them "we don't like this, this is cultural appropriation" and yet Ubisoft doesn't have a problem pushing to have a black lead in the feudal Japan game.

I hope they learned their lesson because Ubisoft did make good games and still has what it takes to make good games again. It just needs to use its head next time and not do stunts like this. Some ideas just don't work.

Using the “only” black samurai as the main protagonist in your game when they are a notation in the entire history of an era is ludicrous. Why not just make something else entirely? Alternate histories and so on, but all in. Make something new, and use a new name. But you won’t. The name sells, and you sold your ‘tegrity to the wrong masters. Keep up the fantastic work, buddy! It helps keep many informed on the s$&) storm that is modern media. And the entertainment value keeps me coming back 🤘

In order to subvert genre convention, you must first have understood WHY those conventions existed in the first place and show that you cared about the genre like a fan.

You forgot to translate the "we had reearchers and historians as advisors" point. They basically mean that they had all this support and they still ignored them since they are not decisionmakers. That's right, I know quite some people who worked for Ubisoft, Hellenists and Egyptologists, and they were constantly ignored in matters unrelated to environnement or buildings.
